Cold Weather, Cold Water... [Updated]

8 May by Crispin Butteriss

Hi All,

A quick update on Winter training.

First up, thank you to everyone for embracing the new training timetable. I understand that it is not easy to reorganise family life when everyone has lots of extracurricular commitments.

I note that after a fairly slow start, the number of Silver swimmers joining the morning sessions is now starting to pick up. This is great to see. The comment from my own Silver swimmer yesterday morning after training, “That’s the best session I’ve ever done. Can we keep doing the morning sessions in Summer? I’m used to them now.” That’s a sample of one!

Please note that the 50m pool is already starting to get colder in the evenings. If your swimmer feels the cold, please make sure they have warm clothes for after training – ideally a deck coat – and if they aren’t already, think about giving the morning sessions in the warm 25m pool a try. They tend to be more sprint focussed, and dare I say it, more fun!

With regard to Saturday morning training, due to competition with the Learn-to-Swim and Pre-Squad programs, we have currently been allocated 2 indoor lanes for the Bronze swimmers. The Silver and Gold swimmers are outside in the 50m pool. We are monitoring this situation closely.

If morning outdoor training proves to be untenable because of the combination of low pool and air temperature, we MAY be able to move indoors. This would require further discussion with NARC. BUT we would definitely need to finish up, and therefore start 15 minutes earlier than the current timetable. Something to keep in mind.

Ian’s [UPDATE 15/5]
Saturday morning training times will be pushed forward by 15 minutes for Bronze, Silver, Fitness Squads to accommodate for lane space indoors. However times are unchanged for Gold State Squad. Below are the updated training times for all squads.

Bronze: 6.30am-7.45am
Gold Fitness & Silver: 6.00am-7.45am
Gold State: 6.00am-6.45am (Gym), 6.45-7.45am (Swim)

thanks everyone.
