Our Trophies! What you need to do to win one...
10 Feb by Crispin Butteriss
Over the past few seasons, parents and swimmers have asked for greater clarity around how club awards are decided, and how effort, improvement, contribution, and performance are recognised at Northcote Swim Club. I’ve put this together in response to those conversations.
The aim here is simple: to be clear about what our different awards recognise, and to help swimmers understand the many ways they can engage positively with the club, set goals for themselves, and feel motivated across a season.
Not every swimmer has the same ambitions, strengths, or pathway in the sport, and that’s something we value. At Northcote, commitment, growth, character, and contribution matter just as much as results — alongside celebrating competitive achievement for those who choose to pursue it.
Awards are decided at the end of the swimming season using official competition results and coach records, and are usually presented at our end-of-season presentation. We also understand that circumstances can vary — things like injury or limited meet availability can have an impact — and in those cases the coaching team and committee will always apply common sense and fairness, guided by the values of the club.

At Northcote Swim Club, our awards are about recognising the many ways swimmers contribute to the life of the club across a swimming season.
They aim to:
• acknowledge effort, improvement, and commitment at training
• recognise positive attitudes, teamwork, and club values
• celebrate season-long participation and performance in competition for swimmers who choose to race
Swimming means different things to different people. Some swimmers are highly competition-focused, others are building confidence and skills, and some swim primarily for health, wellbeing, and social connection. Our awards are designed to reflect that diversity, so swimmers can feel recognised, motivated, and valued for who they are and how they engage.
By combining awards that celebrate effort, consistency, culture, and performance, the club encourages swimmers to stay involved, challenge themselves in appropriate ways, and remain part of the Northcote Swim Club community over time.
